Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. She suffered from an anxiety disorder that was rooted in the word association when she was a child. Ford was first fascinated by acting at the age of teenager and joined the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she wasn't a good fit. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was able to secure the position on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford's first appearance on television was an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". During the Nineties, Tate could be watched on television in programs like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate was a regular performer on stage as well as a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. But Tate soon began to garner recognition for her stand-up comedic performances, which she added to her resume in the year 1996.
